Surfboard is determined to making work more human so it felt right for us to publicly commit to building a business that is a force for good.

We’re extremely excited to announce that Surfboard is now a registered B Corp.

As an early stage company, we’re in the “Pending” state which shows we’re on track to become a full B Corp this year. This means we have met the legal requirement for certification and submitted the full B Impact Assessment. We’ve used this process to identify the right practices and policies we need to put in place as we grow to meet the highest standards of social performance, environmental good and accountability.

For too long software has been used in ways that facilitate poor working practices and we’re on a mission to change this. In our industry this includes intrusive surveillance, one way flexibility between employers and employees; and poor scheduling that results in burnout. We built Surfboard to finally create software that makes lives better for teams whilst helping companies still achieve their business objectives of delighting customers with great service.

Our research shows that over 70% of shift workers report their shift patterns have impacted their mental or physical health and 48% of shift workers have revealed they often have less than 12-hour breaks between shifts. Software is currently built to optimise for “bums on seats” and allowing employees to be treated like statistics, not humans.

The UN Development Goal 8 is to “promote inclusive and sustainable economic growth, employment and decent work for all”. At Surfboard, we’re building simpler, smarter and fairer scheduling software to make it seamless for companies to achieve this goal.

Our shift patterns are created eight weeks in advance so employees can plan their lives around their work. We automatically build fairness constraints to make sure a late shift isn’t followed by an early shift and that Surfboard complies with local labour laws. Finally, our balanced schedules mean that employees work on a variety of tasks to ensure fair distribution of activities across a team and enough time scheduled for training and development.

We’re thrilled to be part of this community of 4,800 companies across 79 countries employing over 400,000 workers who are transforming the global economy to benefit all people, communities and the planet.
